It is important that we exercise the brain to so that we may remain agile and alert as we age.
In the past, scientists were convinced that you couldn’t improve your brain function and that all people’s mental capabilities lessened as they grew older. Under this outdated mode of thinking, people simply believed that memory loss was inevitable and that there was nothing that could be done about it.
Recent brain research conducted over the past few years, however, has demonstrated the brain to be constantly renewing itself, and has resulted in new hope for those suffering from cognitive decline. Also, we are now aware that the brain is capable of learning just as much during the second half of life as in the first half. But for older people, learning may take a longer time and more repetition may be necessary. It is essential to exercise the brain each day; this causes new cells and neural pathways to be generated, leading to better brain function.
What are some things that you can do on a daily basis that will provide a challenge for your brain? Choose activities that stimulate thought, lead to information retention and require you to engage in problem-solving, as these are all excellent options. This could simply involve hobbies that you participate in regularly, such as working crossword or Sudoku number puzzles, playing cards or participating in artistic endeavours like painting or drawing. Even activities like planning for a vacation or acquainting oneself with a foreign culture make it necessary for the brain to process novel information. To provide a challenge for the brain, try learning a foreign language or take up a musical instrument; both of these activities will give your brain a workout. This will result in keeping the memory sharp while also serving to enrich a person’s life.
To maintain a healthy mind it’s important to maintain a healthy body. Maintain a regular schedule of medical check-ups and heed the advice of your physician. Some drugs in combination can cause adverse reactions, therefore keep a close check on what you take and when you are taking it. See a doctor immediately if you have any concerns about your memory.
Even some small changes in lifestyle can have a very positive effect on the brain. A consistent level of stress can affect your brain function, and so can certain health problems, like heart disease and other chronic illnesses. Brain functioning can also be seriously and adversely affected by a prolonged lack of quality sleep. Smoking is hazardous for the brain, as well as every other part of the body. In addition, do not overdo your intake of food and alcoholic beverages. Truth be told, a poor diet is not only bad for your waistline, it’s bad for your brain as well. Eat healthy, focusing on a balanced diet, and be sure to drink plenty of water.
Having positive social interactions is good for your brain and your general outlook on life. A minimum of five meaningful social interactions daily can help a person avoid feeling depressed and isolated. Maintain contact with your acquaintances and your relatives and meet as many new people as you can. Interacting with other people helps you stay alert and gives you a purpose in life.
Lastly, get some exercise. Physical activity is necessary to keep the body and mind at their peak. Because the blood flow to the brain is increased as a result of aerobic exercise, brain cell growth and repair are stimulated. One of the best ways to maintain and improve brain function is to get exercise on a regular basis.

So remember exercise the brain as well as the body.

Look out to the younger generation senior internet use is on the rise.
Are you aware of the fact that the fastest growing group of Internet users are those over 65? At first, it is believed that many senior citizens are reluctant and nervous about keeping up with all the newest fads and technological breakthroughs. Yet the realization of both the permanence and possibilities of the internet causes most forward thinking pensioners to eagerly embrace the Web as a familiar friend.
It may come as a surprise that seniors show more enthusiasm in Internet use than younger generations. When you consider what they use the Internet for and how much spare time seniors have, this is reasonable. It has been suggested that seniors communicate via email to keep in touch with family and friends on a level equal to that of any other age group. It’s awesome when you consider the opportunity to send pictures anywhere within seconds. This fact takes on particular significance when it is understood that it has only been a relatively short period of time since the two primary forms of communication were the telephone and letter-writing. Seniors now take a great deal of interest in chat rooms and sites that focus on the weather, finances, recipes, and hobbies.
Younger generations are expected and believed to play a greater role in convincing seniors to take up enjoying the internet at first. Seniors are believed to find their introduction to the Internet through their children or grandchildren and then quickly become skilled “Silver Surfers” in their own right as they grasp the basics.
This works for the benefit of all as increasing numbers of seniors become more skilled with computers and the Internet. It is only matter of time for more and more pensioners to get updated since the installation of software is becoming easy and computers are becoming more intuitive than before. This being true, a marked increase has occurred in Websites specifically designed to appeal to the 50+ category and senior communities. Websites such as these have been quietly popping up around the Internet for a while now, and they give seniors a new and unique way to make friends and have intelligent conversations with their peers about senior living and anything and everything under the sun.

A certain financial stability has been attained by mature adventurers which enables them to leave the armchair behind and tour the globe. The only thing you need to do is put your mail on hold and pack for the trip you have earned over the past several decades of hard work. The travel industry is designing vacations to meet the preferences of senior citizens, due to the realization that older people have the time and financial means to travel extensively. These planned activities include cultural experiences or other excursions for discriminating tastes. For people who enjoy active vacations involving such activities as golf, heli hiking and mountain biking, there are plenty of opportunities.

Options for Beginners

Various calmer options are available for those who have not travelled much, suffer from health problems or do not wish to go to a remote place. It is possible for you to hire an RV in the US or a join a ‘grey nomad’ caravan in Australia which enables you to take a road trip. Stay on the main roads, which have more gas stations and are better paved. For a classier experience, you could rent a BMW or Mercedes in Europe and cruise around the countryside, exploring B&Bs along the way. Some activities that you could participate in that do not require any special skill or fitness levels include renting a canal boat in England or cruising down the Danube or through the Pacific Islands. Becoming part of a group of your peers who have similar interests in life is an excellent opportunity to make new friends.

Advanced Options

Some companies offer seniors the independence to explore an area on their own and at their own pace, while the company handles the luggage and logistics. This will appeal to those who want to make their own plans.

Many of the tour operators grade their tours, allowing you to select the activity and pace that suits you. An adventure vacation may appeal to you; if you are feeling very adventurous, you could even join an expedition cruise to the Arctic or Antarctic, or you can travel on your own, making your own plans and arrangements.

People aged over 50, when thinking of exercising, will look at gyms, yoga studios, and health clubs with trepidation. Often, this is because of fear: fear of looking weird and not knowing what to do; price may also be a major factor.

Unfortunately, this is the time when many who seek to improve their physical state simply give up and take a nap, or watch a movie, and eat something unhealthy.

A long time ago, the choice for the population over 50 exercisers was to exercise at home. They would purchase magazines on topics such as fitness, books on aerobics, counting their calories, muscle building, running and yoga; but then came the inception of exercise videos.

Now, we have fitness programs daily on cable. These programs deal with everything including yoga, chair exercises, aerobics, (with and without weights), and Pilates. The difficulty is you must be ready to workout when the TV show airs, which might not fit your schedule.

Determining what type of exercise regimen is best for you is often a very intimidating objective for the uninitiated. Running is more than likely out of the question for people who are overweight or who are out of shape. Riding a bicycle may prove too difficult also.

Another smart choice to help you get started is to buy a regular aerobic chair or chair exercise video. This allows the new comer to slowly break-in, keep motivated, and progress at their own pace.

Exercises while sitting can greatly add aerobic conditioning to your daily exercises, help avoid joint damage, increase your metabolism to help lose weight and finish all your everyday chores with refreshed vigor.

To allow for steady progress to greater fitness, many of these videos offer beginning, intermediate and advanced levels of fitness.

In order to get started:

  • Make sure you discuss your program with your General Physician before starting it.
  • Begin at a slow pace that you know you will be able to repeat several times a week.
  • Increase your participation steadily from one to two days a week, to three and eventually four. Rest on days you don’t work out.
  • If anything hurts, either stop or try it slower, or with less resistance and let your body try to be more adjusted to the new requirements you’re trying to place on it.
  • Drink plenty of water to replenish what you’ve lost by sweating and to rid your body of toxins. This is an excellent way to detoxify the body; you will burn calories and gain strength and energy at the same time.
  • Reduce calories, eat sensibly, and you will see quick results.

The body needs to be challenged to improve, so you should re-evaluate your progress once a month so you do not become comfortable in your routine. After you can easily do an exercise program easily, celebrate and go on to something more difficult. This may include: standing or step aerobics, bicycling, swimming, jogging, weight lifting, and more.

The essential thing to remember when exercising as an over 50 year old is that if exercises seem difficult, don’t loose your heart; gather courage and be proud of yourself, that you have at least initiated the first steps towards making your life better. Stay with it, do it consistently, and stay brave.

One of the topics brought up the most by retirees, or folks trying to plan for retirement, is their lack of inspiration as to what they will spend their time doing once they have retired.

There are ways to find inspiration for activities that will lead to happiness and enjoyment in your retirement, and they are often connected and a good way to begin.

Start by considering the things you’ve dreamed about as well as those things you have passionate feelings about. There is no better time in life to live out your dreams and follow your passions than during retirement. If you have a real passion for something in particular, that should provide you with the inspiration you need. Remember the hopes you have had in the past in your life. It is possibly you side-tracked some of your dreams during your lifetime because they didn’t seem to be feasible options at the time. Do those dreams still feel important? Do you still consider them relevant dreams and get excited about them? If yes, you’ve got your inspiration. Well maybe when you were little you saw yourself as growing up to play jazz piano. Perhaps money was tight then, and you spent your time pursing other activities. Piano lessons might be something you should think about now.

Another way to discover your passion is to think of your strengths and decide how those things could carry over into other areas. Consider your strong points and how you employ them, both professionally and with family and friends. If you are already particularly patient and compassionate, try thinking of new ways to use those strengths. If you’re handy at crafts, and have a good teaching ability, one of the things you may do is make your skills available to those who may want to learn what you know. If you want to develop goals and dreams again later in life, you need to evaluate your strengths and determine how they can be used in different ways in your life.

Using a combination of these approaches can be a very effective approach to draw unique inspirations in retirement living. All your passions and your dreams should be given lots of consideration. Get out some paper and draw vertical lines down the page in order to make three columns. In the first two columns, try and match your dreams or passions to your ability and strengths. In the last, third, column, you may list some ways you could give back to society, fulfil some of your goals and dreams, and use your strengths and abilities. By doing this you will have a truly fulfilling and pleasing retirement experience.

If you love reading, and children, for example, the local public library is a wonderful place to volunteer. If you consider yourself a “people person”, maybe you could deliver for Meals on Wheels. There exists no limit to the possibilities.

If you stop and think, you can come up with numerous possibilities. Keep an open mind and be willing to consider all sorts of retirement plans. Consider what you are passionate about and go from there. Above all remember that retirement is a time to enjoy yourself and finding things that you love doing will ensure that you enjoy your retirement years.
