It is important that we exercise the brain to so that we may remain agile and alert as we age.
In the past, scientists were convinced that you couldn’t improve your brain function and that all people’s mental capabilities lessened as they grew older. Under this outdated mode of thinking, people simply believed that memory loss was inevitable and that there was nothing that could be done about it.
Recent brain research conducted over the past few years, however, has demonstrated the brain to be constantly renewing itself, and has resulted in new hope for those suffering from cognitive decline. Also, we are now aware that the brain is capable of learning just as much during the second half of life as in the first half. But for older people, learning may take a longer time and more repetition may be necessary. It is essential to exercise the brain each day; this causes new cells and neural pathways to be generated, leading to better brain function.
What are some things that you can do on a daily basis that will provide a challenge for your brain? Choose activities that stimulate thought, lead to information retention and require you to engage in problem-solving, as these are all excellent options. This could simply involve hobbies that you participate in regularly, such as working crossword or Sudoku number puzzles, playing cards or participating in artistic endeavours like painting or drawing. Even activities like planning for a vacation or acquainting oneself with a foreign culture make it necessary for the brain to process novel information. To provide a challenge for the brain, try learning a foreign language or take up a musical instrument; both of these activities will give your brain a workout. This will result in keeping the memory sharp while also serving to enrich a person’s life.
To maintain a healthy mind it’s important to maintain a healthy body. Maintain a regular schedule of medical check-ups and heed the advice of your physician. Some drugs in combination can cause adverse reactions, therefore keep a close check on what you take and when you are taking it. See a doctor immediately if you have any concerns about your memory.
Even some small changes in lifestyle can have a very positive effect on the brain. A consistent level of stress can affect your brain function, and so can certain health problems, like heart disease and other chronic illnesses. Brain functioning can also be seriously and adversely affected by a prolonged lack of quality sleep. Smoking is hazardous for the brain, as well as every other part of the body. In addition, do not overdo your intake of food and alcoholic beverages. Truth be told, a poor diet is not only bad for your waistline, it’s bad for your brain as well. Eat healthy, focusing on a balanced diet, and be sure to drink plenty of water.
Having positive social interactions is good for your brain and your general outlook on life. A minimum of five meaningful social interactions daily can help a person avoid feeling depressed and isolated. Maintain contact with your acquaintances and your relatives and meet as many new people as you can. Interacting with other people helps you stay alert and gives you a purpose in life.
Lastly, get some exercise. Physical activity is necessary to keep the body and mind at their peak. Because the blood flow to the brain is increased as a result of aerobic exercise, brain cell growth and repair are stimulated. One of the best ways to maintain and improve brain function is to get exercise on a regular basis.
So remember exercise the brain as well as the body.
